Jocotours is an ecotourism operator that promotes birdwatching in Ecuador, offering a wide assortment of bird observation and nature tours, at the same time supporting conservation projects carried out by the Jocotoco Foundation. The four Jocotoco reserves protect 850 bird species, of which more than 100 are endemic to the regions, and more than 50 species are threatened. CASA SIMPSON – TAPICHALACA RESERVE

Location: Zamora Chinchipe Province on the Loja-Vilcambamba Valley – Zuma Road

Casa Simpson Lodge is in a breathtaking environment at an elevation of 2500m at a lookout point facing Cerro Tapichalaca on the eastern Andean slope. It has a large network of trails through high Andean forests, home to many rare and beautiful birds along with astonishing plant diversity, primarily orchids. Our guests will enjoy our comfortable facilities. The lodge was built with local materials and can accommodate 17 people in 7 rooms with private bath, a specious restaurant and lounge with a fireplace. We have a separate cabin for researchers. Casa Simpson is the only lodge in the world where you can see the exclusive Jocotoco Antpitta – an unforgettable experience.

Noteworthy bird species in this reserve are, amongst others: Jocotoco Antpitta, Andean Potoo, Bearded Guan, White-faced Nunbird, Golden-plumed Parakeet, White-necked Parakeet, Crimson-bellied Woodpecker, Dusky Piha, Masked Mountain-tanager and Masked Saltator. You can also wrap up your visit with a detour towards the picturesque Marañon Valley, where a number of special birds can be seen.

UMBRELLABIRD LODGE – BUENAVENTURA RESERVE

Location: El Oro Province near the town of Piñas

Umbrellabird Lodge is easily accessible settled in the lower portion of Buenaventura Reserve, at 500 m altitude. It has seven pleasant cabins with private bathroom, ideal for housing up to 18 people. An open restaurant where you can relax, enjoy your coffee and watch hummingbirds zoom in and out of feeders, while chachakacas and tanagers feed on fruit. The lodge is also home to the ring-tailed coati and in our library we have several reference books on birds and mammals of the area. The reserve is home to a remarkable set of flora ad fauna, including almost 300 bird species, many of them endemic to the area. Special climate conditions have resulted in a wide variety of habitats used by birds.

Noteworthy bird species in this reserve are, amongst others: Gray-backed Hawk, Rufous-headed Chachalaca, El Oro Parakeet, Pacific Royal Flycatcher, Pacific Tuftedcheek, Ecuadorian Tapaculo, Long-wattled Umbrellabird, Club-winged Manakin, Golden-winged Manakin and Ochraceous Attila.

URRACA LODGE – JORUPE RESERVE

Location: Loja Province near Macará City

The Urraca Lodge is settled in the Jorupe Reserve, a few km northeast of Macará City, close to the border between Ecuador and Peru, at 500 m elevation. It has six bioclimatic, luminous cabins, especially designed for rest and relaxation. They are built within forested land, surrounded by gigantic kapok (or ceiba) trees. Social areas include an open and bright restaurant-bar, the best in the entire region, from where numerous fauna and flora species, endemic and rare, can be seen; this includes a wealth of dry forest specialized and globally threatened birds like the Henna-hooded Foliage-gleaner. Jorupe is also the ideal headquarters for exploring Utuana, another reserve owned by Jocotoco Foundation. Six beautiful cabins with private bathroom, the lodge can accommodate up to 12 guests.

Urraca Lodge is strategically placed for watching birds of Tumbesian dry forests in an area characterized by the special charm of gigantic Ceiba trees. Noteworthy bird species in this reserve are, amongst others; King Vulture, Ochre-bellied Dove, Henna-hooded Foliage-gleaner, Blackish-headed Spinetail, Watkins’ Antpitta, Gray-breasted Flycatcher, and White-tailed Jay.

CANANDÉ LODGE – RÍO CANANDÉ RESERVE

Location: Esmeraldas Province, 2 hours from the town of Pedro Vicente Maldonado

Canandé Lodge is an ecological forest hotel located in the typical rainforest of the Choco Region, in the province of Esmeraldas. At 300 m above sea level, it is one of the wettest regions in Ecuador. Three primate species are regularly observed, along with many threatened and range-restricted birds. The Lodge, equipped with four comfortable rooms with private baths can accommodate 11 guests year round. An excellent restaurant amidst tropical rainforest highlights the Lodge’s social area. This is a magical environment, peaceful and filled with natural beauty with an observation tower.

Noteworthy bird species in this reserve are, amongst others: Plumbeous Forest-falcon, Baudo Guan, Rose-faced Parrot, Great Green Macaw, Banded Ground-cuckoo, Black-tipped Cotinga, Long-wattled Umbrellabird, Scarlet-breasted Dacnis, Scarlet-thighed Dacnis, Emerald, Gray-and-gold and Scarlet-and-White Tanagers.
