The Cruise Train (Tren Ecuador) offers a 4-day/3-night trip from Quito to Guayaquil or Guayaquil to Quito. Weaving through the majestic Andes landscapes down to the coastal plains, this voyage is a unique experience aboard South America´s leading luxury train – Tren Crucero

Day 1

T (L/D)

Modifications to itinerary due to Cotopaxi Volcano yellow alert
Staring Point: Check in Swisshotel from 6:30am. Depart at 7:30 northbound to Otavalo by bus. Otavalo-San Roque-Adrrade Marín-San Antonio-Ibarra journey with steam locomotive onboard with lunch included at Puerto Lago Lodge. Afternoon depart to Quito by bus, accommodation and dinner at Swisshotel.

Day 2

W (B/L/D)

Early departure southbound by bus to Cunchibamba. Visit a rose plantation in the area. Transfer to Cunchibamba train station to board Tren Crucero to Ambato. Lunch in Ambato then head to the Urbina train station, the highest altitude of the trip at 3,609 meters, there we visit the Intrepretation Center and visit the last ice-merchant Baltazar Uscha, who still climbs Chimborazo daily to collect ice for the local markets. We continue to the city of Riobamba to spend the night at Abraspungo* or similar accommodation.

Day 3

Th (B/L/D)
Riobamba to Bucay (89 miles). Depart Riobamba to Colta Station in one of the few steam locomotives and visit Balbanera Church, one of the oldest in Ecuador established in 1534. We then visit the Guamote crafts market. After lunch we head to Alausi train station, known for the thrilling Devli’s Nose section climbing steep mountains and narrow gorges. Then we head for the coast and arrive in Bucay where we spend the night at Eterna Primavera* or similar accommodation.

Day 4

F (B/L)
Bucay to Durán (55 miles). On the last day of the journey we pass through tropical rainforest, sugar cane and coffee plantations and visit the Shuar Community. We continue the journey to Durán (Railway complez Eloy Alfaro), and transfer by bus to Guayaquil. Arrive in Guayaquil at 18:00 (6:00pm).
