San Rafael de Sharug is nestled high in the Andes Highlands with only 1837 inhabitants in this very small parish, consisting of 15 communities. Surrounded by natural landscaping and beautiful scenery this area has great potential for adventure tourism, thereby improving the quality of life for its inhabitants.

An ambitious bio-construction project has already begun. This unique program has been developed with the local provincial government and the University of Azuay to assist the community of San Raphael de Sharug in becoming economically sustainable.

This small town has been insulated from the outside world for hundreds of years. Here you will find a tranquil and traditional way of life, and a willingness of this tiny community to transgress and be part of the future. Due to their isolation, many communities in the highlands find it difficult to keep young people interested in staying and working the land, like their ancestors have done for centuries. In San Raphael de Sharug 60% of its inhabitants are children and young people. Tourism here will encourage them to stay, and to be apart of the growth of their community, instead of fleeing to large cities to find work.

Now, for the first time CAZHUMA TOURS is offering volunteer programs to foreign travelers who want to Travel+Volunteer, either by helping the community or through ecological support. Perfect for all ages who want to be of service and make a difference. This experience will not only change the lives of these people, they will change yours.
